Why did NCERT postpone NTSE 2022?

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which conducts the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) each year to select 2,000 scientists from across the country, announced Friday that the exam had been postponed until “further order” this year.

The scholarship under the National Talent Search Scheme is a coveted with lakhs of applicants who participate in the state examination every year. The selection for this scholarship is a two-level process in which the states and union territories conduct the initial screening examination to select and recommend a number of candidates for the national-level examination to be conducted by NCERT. About 5000 candidates take the national exam. The scholarship goes on from class 10 (Rs 1,200 per month) to PhD level (by UGC standards).

This year’s state exam, scheduled to be held in May, has been severely delayed as NCERT still awaits government approval to extend the scheme.

“The government is trying to renew the scheme before extending its approval. They want more visibility for this scheme in rural areas. That takes some time. It’s not like the scheme has been scrapped,” an NCERT official told me The Indian Express.

According to the official statement from the NCERT, NTSE was only approved until March 31, 2021, and since it has not been approved after that, the scheme has been halted until further notice.

“The National Talent Search Scheme is a central sector scheme fully funded by the Government of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of India (Gol). NCERT is an implementing organization for the NTS scheme. The scheme has been approved until March 31, 2021. The further implementation of the scheme in its current form has not been approved and has been postponed until further notice. This is for the information of all concerned,” the official statement read.
