WhatsApp to roll out feature blocking users from taking screenshot of photos, videos sent as ‘View Once’

Meta-owned platform WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to prevent others from taking screenshots of messages sent as ‘View Once’ on the platform.

According to a report in
WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform rolled out the feature with version 2.22.22.3 of the WhatsApp update, but as of now only for Android beta users. The upcoming feature comes as WhatsApp has been working to strengthen its privacy and security policies.

The feature gives WhatsApp users more control over how they want their information to be received, shared and stored. The update makes it impossible for a viewer to take a screenshot of a message, be it a photo or a video, sent using the “View Once” filter.

When someone tries to take a screenshot of ‘View Once’ media, WhatsApp will flash a warning that reads “Unable to take screenshots due to security policy.”

Even if the user somehow gets through this barrier and can record the screen or take a screenshot, the movie will appear blank or black, protecting the media shared by the sender on WhatsApp.

According to the report, only a few Android users of the WhatsApp beta channel can use the feature on the platform. However, the tech giant has not yet officially revealed when it plans to roll out the feature globally to all WhatsApp users.

Meanwhile, Meta had previously announced that it is testing new features that will make it easier for people to switch between Facebook and Instagram.

The tech giant said the new features will make it easier for users to create, access and navigate multiple accounts and profiles on the social networking platform.

The company said users can get notifications for both platforms in one place if they choose to add them to the same Accounts Center.
