A United States news anchor who praised the virtues of British colonialism in India and claimed that country prospered during British rule has outraged Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and many Twitter users, according to a report in Independent. Tucker Carlson, Fox news anchor also falsely claimed that before the dawn of the British colonial era, India had not created any architectural marvels. His comments have been condemned as “racist” and “extremely ignorant” by several users, including tennis star Martina Navratilova.
The anchor spoke on Thursday’s show “Tucker Carlson Tonight” where he went on a rampage, claiming that the British Empire was “more than just genocide”.

“Strong countries dominate weak countries. This trend has not changed. At least the English took their colonial responsibility seriously. They didn’t just take things up, they added. guns. When the British withdrew from India, they left a whole lot of civilization behind, a language, a legal system, schools, churches and public buildings, all of which are still in use,” said Mr Carlson in a clip that has disappeared. viral on Twitter.
He then referred to the Victoria Terminus station in Mumbai, which was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in 2016, and said: “And after 75 years of independence, has that country delivered a single building as beautiful as the Bombay railway station that the British colonials built?”
The comments sparked a debate on Twitter, which also included Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
“I think Twitter should have an option to press something if you can’t respond without losing your cool. For now I’ll be content with,” tweeted Mr Tharoor, responding with two emojis with an angry added face.

Mrs Navratilova also slammed Mr Carlson’s commentsand said on Twitter: “Hey @TuckerCarlson – your total ignorance of history is pretty staggering. I suggest you read Shashi Tharoor’s book “Inglorious Empire” and then try again. Your racism is off the charts and your stupidity about this particular problem is of Olympic proportions!!!”
The Fox News anchor has so far not responded to the criticism.
