INTERNATIONAL Literacy Day 2022: International Literacy Day, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is celebrated on September 8 every year. Since 1967, this day has been celebrated to remind the world of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. It also draws attention to the importance of literacy for individuals, societies and communities. This day emphasizes the need for efforts and measures to create literate societies.

International Literacy Day 2022: Theme

This year, the world is commemorating the day under the theme of Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces. According to UNESCO, it will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy reading spaces for building resilience and ensuring quality, equitable and inclusive education for all. According to the data, in the wake of the pandemic, nearly 24 million students may never return to formal education, 11 million of which are expected to be girls and young women.

International Literacy Day: History

The origins of this day go back to the World Conference of Ministers of Education in Tehran in 1965. However, UNESCO recognized the day at the international level on October 26, 1996. At that time, the world was dealing with issues such as poverty, illiteracy and unemployment.

International Literacy Day: Meaning

Despite the progress, according to UNESCO, literacy problems persist with 771 million illiterate people around the world. Most of them are women, who still lack basic literacy skills and face increased vulnerability. Literacy is also an important part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
