The Callisto Protocol PS4 vs. PS5, Xbox One vs. Xbox Series Comparison: Should You Upgrade?

The Callisto protocol is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC. It’s a fairly demanding game, but how well does it run on last-gen consoles?

Digital Foundry shared a comparison video for The Callisto Protocol revealing the game’s performance on the PS4 and Xbox One and comparing it to the PS5 and Xbox series. Suffice it to say that while the performance is acceptable, it’s by no means an ideal experience.

If you’re wondering what the resolution and frame rate is for The Callisto Protocol on PS4 and Xbox One, here are the details as shared by Digital Foundry.

First, the resolution of The Callisto Protocol on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and Xbox One X. The game appears to render at 1080p dynamic resolution on PS4 and 900p dynamic resolution on Xbox One. On the mid-gen consoles, it renders at a dynamic resolution of 1440p on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Visually, this is a pretty good result for the game, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

In terms of performance, the game appears to run at 30 FPS on these consoles, but Xbox One S continues to struggle at 30 FPS. It drops to just 20 FPS during the game’s demanding segments, giving an overall negative impression of the game.

The Callisto protocol seems to drop to 24 FPS during the in-game cutscenes and this happens on all four consoles. This leads to a drop in performance when playing an in-game cutscene, which is not an ideal experience. Other than that, though, the game sticks well to its 30 FPS goal on the PS4, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X.

Finally, the visuals have been significantly reduced and not just ray tracing. The game lacks the quality textures seen on the PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. It also seems to take a long time to load these textures, which means the presentation is quite blurry when loading a new area. However, if you still own a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, it’s an acceptable experience. Just don’t play it on an Xbox One S.
