Buon compleanno, bambino Monstro!

Ducati press release:

Borgo Panigale (Bologna, Italy), September 15, 2022 – In the second installment of the Ducati World Premiere 2023 web series, Ducati presented the new Monster SP: a version designed to increase the fun, thanks to a perfect package of technical equipment for those who love of sporty driving.

Presented in 2021, the Monster represents the essence of Ducati in the most compact, essential and lightest form possible. The recipe is the original from 1993: a sporty bike, but perfect for road use, combined with a Superbike-derived frame. Everything you need to have fun, every day.

The Monster SP is powered by the 937 cc Desmodromic Testastretta 11° twin-cylinder engine, lighter, refined, improved and naturally utilized as a tense element of the chassis. Euro 5 approved, this engine has a maximum power of 111 hp (81.6 kW) at 9,250 rpm and maximum torque of 9.5 kgm (93 Nm) at 6,500 rpm. All this with a full and friendly delivery curve at all revs, with a particular focus on the mid-low range, most used on the road.

Despite its excellent performance, the Testastretta 937 is an extremely reliable and undemanding engine from a maintenance point of view. Maintenance before oil change has a due date of 15,000 km (9,300 miles), while the valve clearance should be checked every 30,000 (18,600 miles) and adjusted if necessary.

The use of the Ride by Wire system allows to adopt the different riding modes, specially updated and recalibrated for the SP version, to give the possibility to adapt the character of the bike to taste or needs. The slipper clutch that the Monster SP is equipped with works in an oil bath and is extremely light to use and modular, but at the same time performs better in power transmission. The system actually works in two directions by “pushing” the discs together under acceleration and relieving the pressure of the springs when opposing torque is applied, preventing the rear wheel from locking up under the most sudden braking. The gearbox is equipped with the standard bi-directional Ducati Quick Shift, to better support the rider during sporty riding while reducing fatigue during touring or in the city.

The Monster SP’s sporting nature is immediately apparent thanks to the livery that includes the 2022 colors of the Ducati Lenovo Team’s Desmosedici GP, the gold anodization of the Öhlins NIX30 fork and the presence of a Termignoni-approved damper as standard. Particularly high-quality details are the red seat, which is integrated with the tail in the side view, the Monster SP logo on the passenger seat upholstery and the Ducati logo on the fuel tank, larger and inspired by the Panigale V4 graphics.

The SP livery gives the Monster a more attractive and aggressive image, with graphics inspired by the factory team’s Desmosedici MotoGP bikes. Characterized by a play with the three shades of red of the different tags – Ducati Red, Racing Red, Amaranth Red – contrasted with the glossy black, the graphics underline the dynamism of the Monster SP. The red fabric saddle recalls racing footage and helps lighten the tail, creating visual continuity with the side panels in the same color. The latter features the Italian flag along with the specific Monster SP logo. Even on the tank, the Ducati lettering is characterized by higher dimensions, with a clear reference to the Panigale V4 graphics.

Functional and effective, the Monster SP chassis carries the inspiring principles of Ducati Superbikes on a race bike, as has always been the philosophy of the Monster. The load-bearing motor is connected to an aluminum front frame chassis similar in concept to that of the Panigale V4, adding to the bike’s overall lightness. The swingarm is also made of aluminum with a structure similar to the Multistrada V4 unit.

Higher quality components make the Monster SP even lighter, weighing in at 186 kg (410 lbs) in running order. The chassis is also extremely compact, agile and usable, with a wheelbase of just 1,474 mm (58 in.). On the Monster SP, the lightweight self-supporting tail made of GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) that acts as a housing for all the electrical and electronic elements contains a lithium-ion battery, even lighter (3.7 lb) than the one used on the Monster.

The new Ducati Monster SP is equipped with a 43mm diameter hlins fork and Öhlins shock absorber, both fully adjustable, which, compared to the standard Monster units, increase the rider’s ride feel and most importantly the lean angle that can be achieved with sporty driving and the ability to complete the trajectory. The fork, in particular, adds to the Monster SP’s overall relief by being 0.6kg (1.3lb) lighter than the stock Monster unit.

Precision in sporty driving, in terms of distance and acceleration, is further improved thanks to the use, on the Monster SP, of a Sachs steering damper.

Tires (Tires) and Wheels

The light-alloy wheels, marked by the red label highlighting their sportiness, measure 3.50 x 17″ and 5.50 x 17″ and are fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires in size 120/70 at the front and 180/55 at the rear. , for superior performance in sporty driving on the road.

The braking system improves performance, increases power and modulation thanks to the use of Brembo Stylema radial calipers operating on 320mm diameter discs and new aluminum flanges. At the rear remains the 245 mm single drive. The modifications allow the Monster SP to express more braking power, but also improve maneuverability thanks to the reduction in unsprung mass: the Stylema calipers provide a weight saving of 0.4 kg (0.9 lb), the aluminum flanges another 0 .5kg (1.1lb).

The bike’s general lighting also comes with the adoption of a lithium-ion battery, bringing the total weight savings in running condition to about 4.4 lbs compared to the standard model (already a benchmark in the lightness category), despite the addition components such as the steering damper and windshield.

The Monster electronics sector is at the top of the segment. Standard equipment includes ABS Cornering, Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Wheelie Control, all adjustable to different intervention levels. The sporty character of the new Monster SP is also underlined by the Launch Control which ensures a lightning-fast start. This high-quality motorcycle equipment allows the Monster SP to safely express its full performance.

Sport, Touring and Wet Riding modes allow the rider to mold the character of the monster according to taste and needs. Everything is easily controlled via the steering wheel controls and the 4.3-inch TFT color dashboard, with racing graphics similar to those of the Panigale V4, with a large tachometer and a complete set of information on the left, including that of the engaged acceleration.

The Ducati Monster SP will arrive at dealers from January 2023, also in a depowered version for driving with an A2 driver’s license*.
