Robert Vadra’s Tweet With Photo On ‘Bharat Jodo’ Posters Sparks Questions: “Joining Congress, Yatra?”

Posters tweeted by businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

New Delhi:

Businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, today shared posters of the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ with his photo on it, sparking sarcastic comments from the BJP and some questions about what his are plans.

“It’s pretty funny that Robert Vadra is joining the Yatra,” BJP’s former union minister Ravishankar Prasad said in an interaction with reporters, “Will he now claim to speak against corruption?”

Mr Vadra’s tweet showed posters with his photo next to his wife and the main face of Congress, Rahul Gandhi, alongside those of his in-laws, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The posters also had photos of the apparent sponsor, JB Abhijith, identified as a National Students’ Union of India leader of the Congress wing.

Vadra is accused of being a beneficiary of favoritism and corruption by Congressional governments, though he has said he has been unfairly attacked because of his family ties. Congress has taken a position over the years that Mr Vadra is a “private person” and the allegations that he benefits from it are “political vendetta”.

In that light, the overtly political posters in Mr Vadra’s tweet – with the congress symbol ‘hand’ at the top – are conversation starters. He has posted on social media in the past in support of Congress, but this is seen as a pitch to stand alongside the Gandhi family on the political stage.

Unsurprisingly, in replies to his tweet, some Twitter users asked if he had joined the party. He didn’t respond.

Similar questions were asked before the 2019 elections when posters in his hometown of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, “welcomed” him to fight from there. He had told NDTV at the time, “It’s not OK that because I’m part of this family, I just have to put on a certain kind of clothes and be a part of the environment and say, ‘Hey, I’m someone too important or important .’ I have to earn it. That’s what my mother taught me. That if you earn it yourself, it lasts longer.”

As for the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ or Unite India March, Congressman Rahul Gandhi will launch it today from Kanyakumari. The 3,500 km long yatra is completed in almost 150 days.

Rahul Gandhi started his day by visiting his father Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, where he was killed in a 1991 suicide bomb attack by a Sri Lanka-based extremist organization.

Mr Gandhi will walk all the way from Kanyakumari to Kashmir where the yatra will end. He will stay in a shipping container – it has a bed, toilet and air conditioning. Such containers have also been set up for other ‘Bharat Yatris’, who will walk the entire route alongside Gandhi, sources said.

“I lost my father to the politics of hatred and division,” he later tweeted, “I will not lose my beloved country either. Love will conquer hate. Hope will conquer fear. Together we will conquer.”
