Pre-Matric scholarship now limited only to classes 9, 10: Minister

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar, told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that the pre-matric scholarship is now restricted to grades 9 and 10 in government schools, under the OBC category only.

“Only students studying in grades 9 and 10 are covered by the pre-matric scholarship scheme for OBC,” the minister said in the top hour of parliament while responding to a question from MP John Brittas.

This was done to rationalize the scholarship under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, under which the government is required to provide every child with free and compulsory primary education up to grade 8.

The government has increased the number of scholarships and made them uniform for day students and hostellers. About 5.67 crore students are likely to benefit from the scheme over the five-year period.

The trade union minister also gave the beneficiaries’ figures for the past three years. In the year 2021-22 there were 34.43 lakh beneficiaries, in the year 2020-21 there were 166.20 lakh beneficiaries and in 2019-20 there were 94.52 beneficiaries.

The discontinuation of the pre-matric scholarship for students from minority communities studying in grades 1 to 8 drew Flax out of opposition.
