The All Odisha Students Voice (AOSV), a student organization in Bhubaneswar, launched a protest on Thursday demanding student elections in all colleges and universities in the state.
Members of the organization led by President Bibhu Prasad Jena and Biplab Parida held a motorcycle rally and made their way to the official residence of Odisha Higher Education Minister Rohit Pujari in Bhubaneswar.
The students claimed that raids are on the rise because there are no elected representatives on college campuses. As a Result, the problems surrounding the educational institutions remain unsolved, they say.
Speaking to the media, Bibhu Prasad Jena said, “It is really sad that despite our repeated requests and protests, our demands have not yet been met. And this is not an unjustified demand either. A student association in a university of applied sciences predicts a healthy atmosphere on campus.”
“Despite being a student leader in his student days, the minister turned a deaf ear to our demands. The student leaders and representatives can work to elevate their colleges and develop the infrastructure,” said Jena.
“From robbery to drug trafficking, illegal activity is on the rise on college campuses. It needs student representatives as soon as possible. We demand elections for student unions as soon as possible. If our demands are not met, we will go on indefinite hunger strike,” Jena warned.
