Kerala Education Minster V Sivankutty has stated that there are no plans to change the times for Kerala Schools as of now. The state education minister further added that the Kerala government has no plans to introduce gender neutral uniforms in all schools.

According to local reports, the statement was made by the education minister at the state assembly. Kerala has introduced gender neutral uniforms for several government schools; however, it is not a mandate for all schools.

“School boards can decide for themselves about the type of uniform for their students and whether they will be converted into mixed schools. A decision on curriculum reforms will only be taken after consultation with all departments,” the minister said at the state meeting.

Earlier in August, the Kerala government had issued a similar statement that there are no plans to introduce gender-neutral uniforms in all state schools.

Gender neutral uniforms in Kerala have been a topic of debate since 2020. While the idea of gender neutrality has been welcomed by many in Kerala, many organizations have expressed displeasure.

In August, Muslim organizations in the state issued a statement against gender-neutral uniforms, stating that pants and shirts for boys and girls were a “left-wing tactic to promote denial of religion and male dominance.”

Gender neutral uniforms were first introduced in 2020 at a school in Kohizikode. For girls, an allowance of a full sleeve instead of a headscarf was provided.

Kerala School Closed Tomorrow?

In other news: Kerala schools are likely to be closed. The Indian Meteorological Department, IMD had issued a yellow alert for 9 districts on 9 December 2022. Kerala is now expected to receive isolated but heavy rainfall. An official order regarding school holidays is awaited by the state or district governments.
