Mumbai Police reach Bollywood actor’s home with notice

A team of Mumbai police went to the home of actor Ranveer Singh on Friday to subpoena him to appear before the police in connection with an FIR registered against him at Chembur Police Station for posting his nude photos to his Instagram account.

The actor was not at his home and police were told he would be back on August 16 when the police team will visit his home again to issue the subpoena.

Mumbai Police had filed an FIR against the actor on July 26 for allegedly posting photos from his nude photoshoot for Paper Magazine on his Instagram account. The action came after the chairman of a city-based NGO lodged a complaint with the police.

A senior officer said: “We will include his statement in connection with the FIR registered by Chembur Police Station as part of our investigation into the matter.”

According to a note from the Mumbai Police at the time, by posting his nude photos from his photo shoot, the actor, in order to “make a lot of money”, ended up having “a bad influence on young children and society in general”. With this act he also tried to outrage women’s modesty, the note said.

The Gully Boy actor was booked under Sections 292 (sale of obscene books), 293 (sale of obscene items to young people) and 509 (act with intent to offend the modesty of women) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with Section 67A of the IT Act, which pertains to the publication of material containing sexually explicit acts or conduct.

In his statement, the complainant, Lalit Tekchandani, said that on July 24, a friend sent him the images Ranveer Singh had shared on Instagram and Twitter. He said that when he zoomed in on one of the photos, he realized that the actor’s genitals were visible. The photo had gone viral.

“Our country is a country of culture and such pictures can affect children who love movie actors and actresses,” he said.

He said that upon further investigation, he discovered that Singh had done the photo shoot for Paper Magazine and was going to make a lot of money from it. Tekchandani added that the shoot will also influence young people, who are struggling to get into the film industry, to take similar steps to earn money and fame.

Based on the complainant’s statement, the Chembur Police have registered an FIR in this case. An officer said they are investigating the matter and are likely to include the actor’s statement in connection with uploading the photo.

Paper Magazine, which ran the photo shoot, has done a similar nude photo shoot of Kim Kardashian in the past in November 2014.

In the current photo shoot with Ranveer Singh, the actor paid tribute to actor Burt Reynolds’ iconic 1972 nude photo shoot for Cosmopolitan magazine.
