Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier admitted Kylian Mbappe could play with more freedom if another striker was signed.
- Mbappe said he will get more freedom with France
- Galtier agreed with his assessment
- PSG’s failure to sign striker the reason for style difference
WHAT HAPPENED? After scoring against Austria in the Nations League this week, Mbappe said he will get “more freedom” when he comes into action with the national team because of his partnership with Olivier Giroud, who distracts opponent defenders to make room for the PSG star. At club level, on the other hand, he is part of a front three with Neymar and Lionel Messi and has other responsibilities in matches.
WHAT THEY SAID: Galtier did not disagree with Mbappe’s comments, but says the club’s failure to sign a new attacker in the summer transfer window is the reason behind the difference in playing styles, telling reporters: “His analysis is fair “He’s not here in the same configuration as the French national team. It’s a conversation I had with him during the pre-season and a conversation I also had with the president and Luis Campos.
“We were all convinced that we needed a fourth player with a different profile. This fourth player never came. It’s a shame that it is. Kylian has this reference player in the national team. We have a different way of play, different”
THE LARGER PICTURE: Mbappe’s frustration with the style at PSG comes despite the 23-year-old’s decision to turn down an offer to move to Real Madrid and instead sign a new long-term deal in the French capital. Plus, reports of a breakup in his relationship with Neymar only add to his troubles at Parc des Princes.
