Mahua Moitra calls Delhi Police ‘spineless’ after Munawar Faruqui show cancelled | Latest News India

Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra called Delhi police “painless” in response to reports that it has not authorized an event with comedian Munawar Faruqui originally scheduled for August 28. Calling on Mahatma Gandhi and India’s 75 years of independence, the Lok Sabha MP said: “Gandhiji said, ‘I don’t want my house to be walled on all sides and my windows full’. Is the communal harmony of India@75 so fragile these days that it is disturbed by a comedy show?”

The Delhi Police Licensing Unit denied permission after VHP wrote a letter to Delhi Police objecting to the event and warning of protests. The Central District Police has filed a report saying Munawar Faruqui’s show will “affect communal harmony in the area”.

Munawar Faruqui is in the news again as his recent show in Hyderabad sparked a political slugfest that saw Telangana BJP leader T Raja Singh suspended. Ahead of Munawar Faruqui’s show in Hyderabad on August 20, the BJP leader warned that he will burn down the venue if Munawar is allowed to have his show in Hyderabad. While Munawar’s ‘Dongri to Nowhere’ was peacefully held under tight security, Raja Singh released a video the next day in which he made blasphemous comments about the prophet. This caused tensions in Hyderabad, with AIMIM protesting his comments and demanding his arrest. He was arrested on Tuesday, but was granted bail and released another video stating that he will answer the insult of the Hindus in the same language. He was arrested on Thursday. Meanwhile, the party has suspended him for his comments about the Prophet.

For Munawar’s show in Hyderabad, his show in Bengaluru was canceled after objections from Hindu groups, although the comedian cited health reasons for the cancellation. In 2021, Munawar was arrested at a show in Madhya Pradesh on charges of insulting Hindu gods in his jokes.
