ETS develops, manages and scores tens of millions of tests delivered at more than 9,000 locations in more than 200 countries and regions. Simply put, the GRE test assesses the candidates’ knowledge at the graduate level and the TOEFL iBT tests proficiency in academic English.

This month marks one year since ETS established its subsidiary in India, known as ETS India, with Lejo Sam Oommen as Managing Director. Mr. Oommen shares a quick guide of important things to know about the TOEFL iBT and GRE General Test for study abroad aspirants from India.

TOEFL iBT

India is the second largest source country of international students in the world, accounting for 7.6 percent of the global outflow. Data shows that about 74 percent of Indian students go to English-speaking countries, making TOEFL iBT a very important test. The test has been accepted worldwide as a premier English language test for decades.

The test measures students’ English reading, listening, speaking and writing skills as they will be used in academic classrooms around the world. It enables test takers to confidently stand out in English through a TOEFL iBT score that is a true representation of their skills.

It is pertinent to note that not only are the TOEFL iBT tests accepted by 100 percent of universities in the US, but also more than 11,500 universities and other institutions in over 160 countries, with 100 percent acceptance in Canada, Ireland , Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It is also widely accepted by Anglophone programs at universities in non-English speaking countries around the world.

TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years and students always have the option to retake the test if they are not satisfied with their scores. In addition, there are many ways to take the test: in person at a test center, at home (TOEFL iBT Home Edition), and on paper at a test center, followed by the Speak at Home section (TOEFL iBT Paper Edition). This provides test takers with a robust portfolio of options to test in a way they are most comfortable with.

GRE general test

The GRE General Test is the world’s most widely administered admissions test for graduate and professional schools, including business and law programs. It is accepted by institutions in English-speaking countries and beyond, from Argentina to Zimbabwe, and acceptance is growing in India as well. Nearly 100 graduate management programs across India accept the test, including leading institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

After a pandemic reduced the number of applications for education abroad from 2019-20 to 2020-21, the volume of testing in India increased by 3.1 percent. From 2020-21 to 2021-22, the test volume in India increased by 68 percent. According to recent trends, nearly 50 percent of applicants now opt for home testing. To ensure fairness and safety, the GRE General Test at home uses best-in-class security measures that use real-time human monitoring as well as artificial intelligence and technology to track and respond to the tiniest incidents.

The GRE tests are healthier and offer a wide range of options for students who want to study abroad as these tests are accepted not only in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but also in business and law. The scores are valid for five years and students are also given a percentile rank to help them compare their scores against a larger pool of candidates.
