“Not everyone would welcome it. It is not just the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) that is against it. Many people in Kerala have not accepted that concept. It is not necessary,” Mr Muraleedharan said, speaking to reporters here .

He also said that the policy was also against the norms and beliefs of some and therefore should not be forced on anyone.

Instead, the state government should focus on ensuring the safety and security of women.

Recently, Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty had criticized the stance of certain IUML leaders on the state government’s gender neutral policies, claiming that they were trying to mislead the people and trying to know why they fear equal opportunities for women in society.

Sivankutty had also made it clear that when it comes to gender-neutral uniform or coeducational schools, the CPI(M)-led government does not impose any coercion on anyone.
