iPhone 15 series to miss out on Apple’s in-house 5G modem: Report

Among other upgrades, the Apple iPhone 15 series was expected to include the company’s internal 5G modem. But now Qualcomm has confirmed it will continue to offer 5G modems for a majority of next-generation iPhones, Bloomberg reports. The company previously planned to ship about 20% of 5G modems for iPhone 15 models.

Qualcomm had planned to supply only about 20% of 5G modem parts for the new iPhones by 2023, but now expects to maintain its current position, according to comments on Wednesday’s earnings report. will not transition to its own in-house modem design next year,” the Bloomberg report said.

The report shows that Apple has been working on its own 5G modem since 2020. But it has had significant setbacks that led to the delay. The prototypes reportedly faced the problem of “overheating in the past year”.

Trusted industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also said Apple “may have failed” to develop the modem, forcing it to rely on Qualcomm for the foreseeable future. Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu said last month that Apple’s modem iPhone launches in both 2023 and 2024.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Apple may drop the physical power and volume buttons on iPhone 15 Pro models. Instead, it can bring solid state power and volume buttons to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Cupertino-based company is also expected to adopt a new naming scheme for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It can be called iPhone 15 Ultra and it is said to come with a premium titanium case. Titanium would not only give the upcoming Apple iPhone 15 Ultra a premium feel, but it will also make the smartphone lighter, stronger and more scratch-resistant than steel.
