Rise in India traveling abroad for education this year

An increase has been observed in the number of Indians going abroad on a student visa this year. Nearly 6.5 lakh students went to other countries for education in 2022, more than the number recorded before the pandemic, data from the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) The Hindu reported.

The BoI, which falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), keeps records of Indians going abroad based on passengers’ verbal disclosure or the type of destination country visa they have presented at the time of immigration.

According to the data, 6,48,678 students flew abroad on a student visa through November 30, marking the highest level in five years.

However, the statistics showed that international travel among Indians remained below pre-pandemic levels for purposes such as business, work, medical care, pilgrimages and others.

In addition to student visas, the number of Indians traveling on a visit visa will grow significantly in 2022, the report said.

Overall, the number of Indians going abroad has increased by more than 137% from 2021.
