In Wrestling Controversy, New Trouble Over Committee Headed By Mary Kom

A day after the sports ministry formed an oversight committee to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct against officials of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and manage the day-to-day affairs of the body, top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia tweeted that they were not consulted before the commission was formed. Boxer Mary Kom was named as the head of the five-member oversight committee that will investigate the sexual harassment allegations against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The government-appointed committee will also run the day-to-day operations of WFI over the coming month.

The other members of the panel are Olympic medalist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI Executive Director – Teams – Radhica Sreeman.

“We were assured that we would be consulted before the oversight committee was formed. It is very sad that we were not even consulted before this committee was formed. @narendramodi @AmitShah @ianuragthakur,” Vinesh Phogat wrote in a tweet.

Bajrang Punia also wrote the same words on Twitter.

World Championship bronze medal winner and Commonwealth Games champion Geeta Phogat also requested the Prime Minister to intervene and help resolve the matter.

Geeta tweeted: “I request the honorable prime minister of the country, all the sisters and daughters of our country look to you with great hopes and expectations. If we all sisters and daughters don’t get justice, then it will be a great misfortune in the history of the country.”

The announcement of the panel was made on Monday by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

Thakur had decided to form the committee on Saturday following a three-day sit-in protest by some of the country’s top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya against the WFI and its chief.

The wrestlers ended their protest after a breakthrough was made late Friday night during a second round of marathon talks with Thakur.

“The WFI President will not fulfill his duties and will stay away from the daily affairs of WFI. The day-to-day operations of WFI will be taken care of by the Oversight Committee until their term of office and it will also review the serious allegations against WFI and its chief,” Thakur said. .

“The oversight committee will be chaired by world champion Mary Kom. Together with her, Yogeshwar Dutt, MOC member and Dronacharya winner Trupti Murgunde, former TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former ED Teams, SAI Radica Sreeman will be part of the committee.

“In the coming month, this committee will investigate the sexual allegations and other allegations after speaking with all parties and submitting its report. Until then, all day-to-day decisions and operations of WFI will be made by this committee,” he added. .

Both May Kom and Yogeshwar are also part of the seven-member commission formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to investigate the allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the WFI chief.

In addition to legendary boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, the IOA panel includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) President and IOA Treasurer Sahdev Yadav.

The other members of the IOA committee are two advocates – Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra – in addition to former shuttler and IOA co-secretary Alaknanda Ashok, who is the vice-chair.

The hot wrestlers, including the young Anshu Malik, Sangeeta Phogat and Sonam Malik, started the sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of the WFI chief.

The wrestlers also demanded that the WFI be dissolved immediately and that a new panel be formed, including grapplers in it.
