Down and out after losing the first two ODIs against Bangladesh, the Indian cricket team remarkably bounced back to win the third ODI and salvage some pride. The match saw not only veteran Virat Kohli pick up his 72nd international hundred, but also Ishan Kishan who set a ‘record-breaking’ double century in the 50-over format. While Kishan has understandably strengthened his position in India’s ODI squad, former India opener Wasim Jaffer feels sad about what the current situation means for Shubman Gill.
Gill has done very well for the Indian team in the 50-over format, with a plethora of runs, but he was not even picked for the ODI series against the Bangla Tigers. Jaffer, in a video op Cricinfosaid Kishan’s double barrel now puts him ahead of Shubman in the pecking order for openers for the ODI format.
“Ishan Kishan is now clearly putting himself ahead of Shubman Gill. I feel a little sad for Gill, he was the leader for this innings. He was the third opener in line after Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan and now he will be fourth. Sometimes you feel why Gill isn’t on the team, there’s nothing wrong he did,” Jaffer said.
Jaffer remains of the opinion that Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma will be India’s favorite opening pairing in ODIs, although he admitted that a call should be made about the southpaw who has not been in the best form of recent times.
“He did really well in New Zealand and with all the other opportunities he got. But we’ve seen a few players miss out and get dropped in the recent past and this is going to put them in another dilemma now. Who’s their third and fourth opener and what to do with Shikhar Dhawan He’s the senior opener and he’s had a bad run They like to support him because of the kind of record he has Those No 3 and No 4 options for openers will be a question mark,” he said.
