Golden Globe Awards 2023: SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR bags two nominations; Jr NTR is ‘delighted’

SS Rajamouli’s RRR took two places at the prestigious 2023 on Monday Golden Globes nominations list. The film is nominated in the Best Picture – Non-English Language category and competes with All Quiet on the Western Front, Argentina, 1985, Close and Decision to Leave. RRR song “Naatu Naatu” is nominated in the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category, competing with “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing, “Ciao Papa” from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick and “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

After announcing the nominations, RRR actor Jr NTR took to Twitter to express his happiness. He tweeted, “Happy to have #RRRMovie nominated in two categories at the Golden Globe Awards! Congratulations to all of us… Looking forward to it.”

Rajamouli’s RRR has been in the headlines since it hit theaters and its recent arrival in the West, thanks to Netflix and US screenings, is just the icing on the cake. The film has garnered several international awards, including Rajamouli’s Best Director Award from the New York Film Critics Circle. The film also won the Saturn Prize in the Best International Film category. The National Board of Review named RRR one of the ten best films of the year. The magnum opus also took second place in the Best Picture category at the 2022 Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards.

Speaking of RRR’s success in the west, SS Rajamouli told Indiewire, “Of course I’m happy about it. I can’t pinpoint why it happened, but I’d say part of it is that Western audiences don’t get the full action of Masala movies. Maybe Hollywood movies don’t give them enough of that. That’s what I understand when I look at the response. In any case, that really surprised me and I am very happy with it.”
