Goa to implement NEP in graduation courses from next academic year, says CM Sawant

The Goa government is planning to introduce foundation course and graduate level course as per National Education Policy (NEP) in educational institutions from the next academic year, Pramod Sawant said, the chief minister said on Wednesday, according to an official statement.

The statement was made during a state-level speech on the NEP in Sankhali. Furthermore, Sawant said there is confusion about the implementation of the policy in technical education. “The confusion would be resolved in two to three months,” he said.

The CM went on to say, “Goa is one step ahead of other states in implementing the NEP in its educational institutions. From next academic year we will introduce a propaedeutic phase and the syllabus at graduation level.” Sawant said that the Goa directorate of technical education and directors of the skills development and higher education departments have been asked to address the “confusion” prevailing over the implementation of the NEP in technical education.

All stakeholders, including directors and teachers of educational institutions, should contribute to the implementation of the NEP, he said. “It’s not the state government’s sole responsibility,” Sawant said.

Two committees headed by state water resources minister Subhash Shirodkar and former chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar are working to roll out the NEP in the state, the CM said.

“All educational institutions, including those providing skilled and technical training, are being taken on board to decide on the implementation of the NEP,” he said, adding that there are also 1,247 kindergartens registered with the education department.

Sawant said the syllabus for the Foundation Course, Foundation Course I and Foundation Course II was ready and master trainers were also being trained for its implementation.

“The taluka-wise training of teachers has also begun,” he added.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had previously called the NEP a knowledge document and said it aims to make education accessible to all.
