Google’s popular Gmail service is down for many users around the world and many are still facing a problem. Downdetector.com reported a spike in Gmail’s outage status in the past hour, though it appears the email service is back for some users. However, Google’s own app status dashboard shows a problem with Gmail.

According to the dashboard, Google admits there is a problem with the service. The information for Gmail adds: “We are having an issue with Gmail. Users may experience delays in email delivery. Our technical team continues to investigate the issue. We will respond no later than Saturday, 12-10-2022 08:30 US/ give Pacific an update with current details.”

An update from the team suggests a fix is on the way. The latest update reads: “A mitigation is currently underway and email delivery is no longer failing, but the Google Engineering team is now working on the backlog of bounced messages and expects all messages to be delivered in the next few hours. We will provide more information no later than Saturday 12-10-2022 at 10:00 am”

Across India, users complained about undelivered emails and an unresponsive Gmail app. Gmail’s corporate services are also affected at this time. Gmail, which has more than 1.5 billion users worldwide, was among the most downloaded apps of 2022. A few hours after the outage was first reported, Downdetector continued to list the email service in the red. Both the app and desktop services have been impacted by this unprecedented outage.

Google has yet to officially release a statement about the outage. We’ll update this story as soon as there are more details about the cause of this latest outage. Previously, Meta’s WhatsApp went down in the month of October, causing a massive disruption given the large number of users on the platform. As always, when major services from Google or Meta face an outage, the size of users affected is much greater as these platforms have billions of customers.
