Fire breaks out in Fashion Street, over 12 shops gutted, no injuries reported; watch video

Mumbai: The devastating fire that broke out on Fashion Street around 1pm on Saturday burned down 23 shops within minutes and blew up equipment worth lakhs rupees from the sellers. Officials said there were no injuries, and the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes.

According to officials, the fire service was alerted about the incident and six fire trucks rushed to the scene. The flames were huge, but the fire was brought under control before it spread to more stores.

The fashion street was closed and the electricity was cut.

The entire fashion street with more than 300 shops was completely closed and the electricity went out. The shop owners whose shop burned down were seen in tears and trying to comfort each other.

Santosh Shah, from Uttar Pradesh, who has been working at Fashion Street selling jeans for 25 years, was in tears as he summed up the whole incident, including how he lost everything in minutes.

“The fire was uncontrollable; it spread so quickly that we didn’t know what to do. Should we just run? Should we try to collect as much of our stock as possible from us? At that point we just went empty. Some of our to throw out stock but then the tin shed above it fell on it and even that was burned There was no insurance or anything now all that is left of my 15 lakh stock is just ashes I have a family to feed; I don’t know what to do; I’ll have to borrow money somewhere to restart the business.”

This isn’t the first time a store has caught fire here.

Regarding previous short circuits in the meter, Shah added: “This is not the first time a store has caught fire here.” All the meters in the shops here are faulty; they keep presenting a problem, and we need to fix it. Just last month, one store caught fire due to a faulty meter, but luckily it was limited to one store and the fire was extinguished. There was a similar incident almost a year ago and yesterday BEST people had come to repair a meter in an adjacent shop. These are our daily problems and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

The losses are estimated at Rs 1 crore, the sellers said.

Another seller, Salman Shaikh, said: “I was lucky that it didn’t happen to my store; I really don’t know what I would do. I have already borrowed money from several people to buy the shares. The incident happened on a weekend when sales are at their peak, we’re all having huge losses.”

Shoppers flocked to shop late into the evening.
