Finnish delegation promises cooperation in Kerala’s public education

A Finnish delegation visiting Kerala has pledged academic cooperation for projects carried out by the state government in the public education sector. Mutual cooperation is expected to contribute to the implementation of new ideas in projects of the General Education Department.

Last December, the Prime Minister and the General Minister of Education held talks with a delegation from Finland, admired worldwide for its successful education system. A second Finnish delegation is currently visiting the state to continue talks and cooperation on several fronts.

In the first phase, cooperation will be ensured in the areas of teacher training, educational models, sciences, mathematics and raising academic standards.

The delegation participated in a seminar on educational activities organized by the Samagra Shiksha, Kerala. The members believed that several initiatives of the Finnish National Board of Education were similar to the Kerala model.

The delegation, made up of experts in higher education in Finland and heads of departments from the University of Helsinki, including Tapio Lahtero, Riikka Halikka, Minna Saade, and the university’s liaison officer, Unnikrishnan Sreedhara Kurup, held talks with state-led officials of General Education Principal Secretary APM Mohammed Hanish.

The seminar discussed in detail non-academic activities to be carried out especially for children aged 3 to 9 and pre-school education. Presentations were made on the special training provided to teachers in Finland and on the relations of the Finnish Board of Education with parents of students. Presentations were also given on the projects carried out by the Samagra Shiksha for the General Education Department.

Samagra Shiksha, Kerala, Project Director AR Supriya spoke about the program’s interventions and activities in the general education sector.
