Recalling the sledding tactics Pakistan adopted during his playing days, former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali said none of his teammates had ever sled former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin. In a recent interaction Basit revealed that he was told to sled players like Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja to disrupt their rhythm but when it comes to Azhar they all had huge respect for them and as a result none of his seniors had in the team has ever asked him to sled the former Indian skipper.

“Before every game in India, I was given the responsibility to sled the Indian players. I was told to disturb Sachin (Tendulkar), Jadeja (Ajay), Sidhu (Navjot), Kambli (Vinod), but the moment Azhar bhai’s name came, the whole team unanimously said that no one would disturb Azhar bhai. I have no words to describe how much respect we used to have for Azhar Bhai in our dressing room,” Basit said in a video released on his YouTube channel, which also featured Mohammad Azharuddin.

“Whether it was Wasim (Akram) bhai, Salim Malik, Rashid Latif, Inzmam-Ul-Haq and Waqar Younis, they would not dare to sled Azhar bhai. I don’t think any Pakistani player has ever insulted Azhar Bhai,” he added.

Azhar was the captain of the Indian cricket team when talents like Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid made headlines and Basit said the former skipper sacrificed his batting spot to promote the youngsters who would go on to become legends of the sport.
