Early Childhood Education Curriculum Enhancement And Pedagogy Project

1. What is the Early Childhood Curriculum and Pedagogy Improvement Project?

The Early Childhood Education Curriculum Enhancement and Pedagogy Project (2017 – 2022) is a five-year capacity building initiative organized by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) and Muktangan Education Trust, a non-profit organization that supports municipal schools in Mumbai.

The project aimed to raise the professional standards and quality of the early childhood education (ECE) sector in Mumbai through improved ECE curriculum and pedagogy in Muktangan schools and other non-profit ECE schools there.

Since 2017, the SIF team of Singapore International Volunteers (SIVs), made up of pioneers and leaders from the ECE sector in Singapore, has been working closely with approximately 700 Indian educators from Mumbai. Together they completed a series of in-person and online workshops, dialogues, a study visit and a symposium as part of the project.

2. What are the main focus areas for this project?

The project was designed to strengthen the areas of program delivery, student learning and teacher development. The educators from Singapore and India worked together and exchanged knowledge, skills and resources to improve teaching methodology and create a curriculum that promotes children’s development and growth.

The project covered topics such as parental interactions and involvement, teacher assessments, play facilitation, social development, classroom learning environments, inclusive practices and early interventions.

3. Have any online resources been curated for this program?

The SIVs have developed an online resource – a Teacher’s Resource Facilitation Guide – with content from the workshops. This content will be helpful for the continued learning and development of pedagogical skills of the ECE practitioners in Mumbai.

4. How does early childhood education play a role in a child’s growth?

Early childhood education is an essential building block of a child’s growth. It helps children develop social and cognitive skills during their crucial early years, which will positively impact their learning and growth in later years. It lays a solid foundation for their physical, intellectual, social and emotional development. We are therefore privileged to have partnered with Muktangan Education Trust on this initiative to ensure that children in Mumbai have access to quality education.

5. How has the program influenced intercultural learning between the two countries?

The series of in-person and online workshops, dialogues and study visits provided opportunities for professional exchange and knowledge exchange between the teachers from both countries. Through the discussions and activities, they were challenged to think about what makes teaching and learning effective in different environments and cultural environments. This in turn resulted in a better understanding of the different needs and required techniques. It also led to budding friendships between the educators and fostered long-lasting camaraderie.

6. How has the program helped Indian students?

The project provided 34 Indian teachers with the relevant skills and knowledge to train other preschool teachers. At least 3,400 Indian ECE teachers learned through the project how to improve curricula and gained new pedagogical and assessment skills. Collectively, approximately 45,000 educators and students in Maharashtra have benefited from this project.

She noticed that the students were more engaged and interested when the new storytelling and math techniques and the holistic teaching curriculum were used. The students were also more confident in the transition from kindergarten to primary school.

We are also encouraged to learn that our partner Muktangan Education Trust has launched a curriculum improvement program with ECHO India where they are applying their lessons from this project through a tele-mentoring model. Through initiatives such as these, knowledge gained is shared with a larger number of lecturers and subsequently with students

7. What are the next steps with this program going forward?

The five-year project was successfully concluded with a closing ceremony in Mumbai in November 2022. However, sustainability is always at the heart of SIF’s projects. The train-the-trainers approach means that the Master Trainers are equipped to train other ECE trainers. This builds capability and capacity on an individual and organizational level and strengthens the long-term impact and sustainability of the project. The development of the Teacher’s Resource Facilitation Guide is also driving continuous learning and skills development among Mumbai’s ECE practitioners.

We are encouraged by the results of this collaboration, which was driven by the dedication of our kindergarten teachers from Singapore and India. We look forward to more opportunities to work with our friends in India to improve lives and build a better world.
