Ducati Panigale V4 R unveiled: specifications, features, engine

The engine has a 998cc V4 that can run up to 16,500 rpm in sixth gear.

Ducati has unveiled the 2023 Panigale V4 R worldwide and includes a few key changes that would have made it an even more powerful tool.

2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R: engine

At the heart of this motorcycle is the 998cc, Desmosedici Stradale R, V4 engine that delivers peak power of 218 hp at 15,500 rpm and 111.3 Nm at 12,000 rpm. This engine can spin up to 16,000 rpm in the first five gears, while it can spin up to 16,500 rpm in sixth. To achieve such high revs, the company has used lighter components and also modified some internal parts of the engine.

The intake camshafts are new with the valve lift increased by 1mm. The pistons have a new geometry that has resulted in a 5 gram drop in weight compared to last year’s bike’s engine. In addition to the benefits of reduced weight in the form of reduced inertia, the pistons receive a DLC surface treatment to reduce friction.

Ducati has also installed new “gun-drilled-type” connecting rods that are said to improve pin lubrication by allowing oil to flow from the head to the base of the connecting rod. This would improve reliability in extreme conditions.

Ducati says meeting the strict Euro 5 emissions standards has affected the engine’s performance in standard equipment due to the limitations caused by the exhaust system. In the ‘Race configuration’, however, the bike gets an Akrapovic racing exhaust that boosts the power to 237 hp, 3 hp more than before.

In fact, using a specially developed engine oil and in combination with the racing exhaust, the V4 develops 240.5 hp. To put things in perspective, the curb weight of the motorcycle with the racing exhaust is 188.5 kg, and with the engine in the 240.5 hp trim, this equates to a power-to-weight ratio of 1275.86 hp/ tons.

The V4 is mated to a gearbox with the same gear ratios used by Ducati’s WSBK race machine. First, second and sixth gears have been lengthened, making first gear more usable on tight corners, for example.

Ducati has also made a few tweaks to the bike’s electronics package. First, there are four riding modes: full, high, medium and low. The latter reduces the power to 160 hp to facilitate driving in difficult road conditions.

In addition, the bike has a new Engine Brake Control software and a Quickshifter system that makes it smoother to use on the road and on the track.

While there are no changes to the main frame, the Ohlins suspension has been revised. The Ohlins NPX25/30 fork has 5mm extra travel, while the Ohlins TTX36 monoshock uses a less stiff spring. The adjustable swingarm pivot has also been raised, which in turn has increased the rear height by 20mm. Ducati says these changes have improved the way the bike enters turns or changes direction, such as while going through a chicane.

2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R: Ergonomics and Aerodynamics

The bike has a new 17 liter brushed aluminum fuel tank, a flatter seat and new padding that makes it easier to move back and forth, while placing the rider in a position that offers better support when cornering or braking.

Rounding out the list of updates for the Panigale V4 R are new aerodynamic bits. This includes new wings that are thinner and more compact while being able to generate the same amount of aerodynamic load. The lower half of the fairing has also undergone some changes to the hood layout to improve engine cooling. There is also a separate air intake to cool the sensor for the Ducati Quickshifter system.
