Veteran India lead-off hitter Shikhar Dhawan had a poor result with the bat during the recently concluded ODI series against Bangladesh. Dhawan achieved scores of 7, 8 and 3 as India lost the series 1-2. In the final ODI, young lead-off batsman Ishan Kishan scored the all-time fastest ODI double century after coming on to replace Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who did not play the match due to a thumb injury. That said, Indian wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, who was not part of the squad for the series, has expressed doubts about Dhawan’s future in the ODI squad.
While highlighting the current form of youngsters like Kishan and Gill, Karthik felt it could be the end of Dhawan’s ‘glorious ODI career’.
“Where does Dhawan stand for the Sri Lanka series? It’s going to be interesting to see how they’re going to omit Ishan Kishan. Shubman Gill is doing so well. If Rohit Sharma is available, someone must be missing out. It would really help him (Dhawan) That could be a sad end to a glorious career. But to answer some questions for the new selectors,” Karthik said during a discussion on Cricbuzz.
With the ODI World Cup to be held in India in 2023, Karthik said Dhawan might struggle to get into the playing XI.
“Interestingly, if Shubman Gill had been part of the squad, he probably would have opened because he’s been doing it with confidence for a while now. Ishan Kishan, who got the chance, grabbed it with both hands and really made it count. is going to put Shikhar Dhawan in trouble,” he added.
Dhawan is just one part of India’s ODI line-up, having been sidelined in both Tests and T20Is. He has also captained the Indian team in the 50-over format on a few occasions.
