Rahul Gandhi said that the yatra is like a ‘tapasya’ for him

Ahead of the 2024 general election, Congressman Rahul Gandhi will launch the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ today from Kanyakumari. The 3,500 kilometer yatra is completed in almost 150 days.

Here are the top 10 latest updates on Bharat Jodo Yatra

  1. Rahul Gandhi started his day by visiting his father Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, where the former prime minister was killed in a suicide bombing on 21 May 1991.

  2. After visiting his father’s memorial, Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “I lost my father to the politics of hatred and division. I will not lose my beloved country to it either. Love will conquer hate. Hope will defeat fear. Together we will overcome.”

  3. Mr Gandhi claimed social polarization and political centralization under the rule of the BJP and had previously said that the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is like a ‘tapasya’ for him to unite the country.

  4. Congress has planned the march as a massive mass outreach exercise ahead of the 2024 general election. Congress leaders, however, denied any political angle, insisting that the yatra is “intended to unite the country.”

  5. Mr Gandhi will attend an evening event at Mahatma Gandhi Mandapam in Kanyakumari where Prime Minister MK Stalin will hand over the national flag to him for the launch of the yatra.

  6. The 3,500-kilometer yatra, dubbed by Congress the “longest march” staged in the country in the past century, will be launched with a rally around 5 p.m., and the “padyatra” or foot march will begin on Thursday morning.

  7. Led by Rahul Gandhi, congressional officials and leaders will walk in two groups every day from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to cover 12 states and two union territories over the next 150 days.

  8. Mr Gandhi will walk all the way – from Kanyakumari to Kashmir where the yatra will end. All state unit presidents would organize the “Bharat Jodo Yatra” in their respective states in solidarity with Mr Gandhi, the party said in a statement.

  9. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is also in Kanyakumari for the launch of ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, said congress leaders and workers want Rahul Gandhi to take over as party head. “This will strengthen the party,” he said.

  10. Congress says the yatra is the party’s largest ever ‘Jan Samparka program’, in which they will try to reach out to ordinary citizens on various issues, including inflation, price hikes and unemployment. Party MP Jairam Ramesh said the yatra is a “transformative moment for Indian politics and a defining moment for the rejuvenation of the party”.
