7 Killed, Many Injured After Bus Falls Off Bridge In Jharkhand

The rescue operation is underway as some passengers are still trapped inside the bus.

At least seven people were killed and many others injured after a bus carrying about 50 passengers fell off a bridge in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district on Saturday, police said.

The accident happened when the Ranchi bus coming from Giridih district broke the railing of the bridge and fell on a dry spot in the Siwanne River in Tatijharia Police Station, Police Chief Inspector Manoj Ratan Chothe said.

“Two passengers died on the spot and five others succumbed to their injuries. The number of fatalities could rise as several were seriously injured,” he said.

Several passengers were trapped in the bus and were rescued.

The damage could have been greater if the bus had fallen into the water in the middle of the river, the officer said, adding that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

A DSP officer and three responsible police stations were sent to the scene to oversee the rescue operation, the SP added.

Mamta Saluja, a passenger who suffered minor injuries in the accident, said: “There were Sikh pilgrims on the bus who were going to a gurudwara in Ratu area of Ranchi to participate in a religious function.” President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their grief over the loss of life in the accident.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the deaths of people in a road accident in Hazaribag, Jharkhand. My sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this accident. I wish all those injured a speedy recovery,” Murmu said. .
